Sparrow Indonesian Restaurant - Highgate

As my family originated from Indonesia, there is a special spot in our hearts for Indonesian food. There are a few Indonesian restaurants around Perth and one of our favourite has to be Sparrow Indonesian Restaurant. This place must be a favourite of a lot of other people as well as there are always large crowds dining in and buying take-away every day and night they are open!

I had lunch with mum and her friend who was visiting from Bandung, Indonesia. I hadn't planned on taking them to Sparrow as they were actually going back to Indonesia soon, where they can eat Indonesian food to their hearts' content. But, ironically they were both craving Indonesian food and mum's friend was desperate to try Sparrow after hearing our raving reviews. We purposely chose lunch time to increase our chances of getting a comfortable table

Ikan Asam Pedas - Fish fillet in hot and sour sauce ($10)

For lunch, we chose one dish each and waited patiently for the food to be served. The first to come out was my fish dish. I had chosen the gulai ikan (fish curry), but they had mixed up my order and delivered the ikan asam pedas instead (fish with hot and sour sauce). At first I was disappointed as I had been looking forward to my curry, but as we dug in, I found that this was even tastier than the curry! The sauce was had so many levels of flavours and all the herbs were subtle but present. The sauce was spicy but not too overpowering and the sour aspect balanced the heat well. The fish itself was well cooked and the skin very crispy, adding a very nice texture. Even though we didn't intend on trying this dish, it has easily become our new favourite dish here. *Fist pump moment* (or should i say *fish pump*)

Udang Asam Manis - Shelless prawn with sweet and sour sauce ($9.50)

Mum's friend ordered the udang asam manis (prawn with sweet and sour sauce). Unlike sweet and sour sauce at Chinese restaurants, the sauce here was not thick, but watery. Despite the texture, the sauce was still bags of flavour. I loved how they had removed the shell before hand, making eating very convenient. The prawns was large and juicy and for the price there was a generous amount of prawns.

Beef Rendang ($7.50)

The dish mum ordered was the beef rendang. Judging by the amount of diners who order this dish, this is the most popular dish they have. Well, for good reasons! One, for the portion size the price is rarely seen in other restaurants around Perth. Two, that sauce is to die for, very rich and tasty and penetrates into the beef very well, every inch of the beef is tasty. Three, the beef itself, slow cooked to perfection making it very tender and melt-in-your-mouth! This is a must order dish when dining at Sparrow.

Nasi Kuning - Yellow coconut Rice ($2)

I would also like to make a special mention to their nasi kuning (yellow coconut rice). They only make a limited amount a day and it runs out very quickly. We were fortunate enough to have been able to order two serves of it. As you may know, Indonesians love to cook with coconut milk, well yellow coconut rice is rice that has been cooked in coconut milk and turmeric. Their nasi kuning is tasty enough to eat on its own or goes perfectly with all their main dishes! The rice is so fluffy and tasty, just perfect!

Mum's friend was so impressed by the food here, she ordered the rendang for takeaway, which I ate as she left for Indonesia before getting a chance to eat it! *Another fist pump moment*

Sparrow Indonesian Restaurant is a must try! Also, you didn't hear it from me, but they do give 10% discount to first time diners! The co-owner is also the waiter and he's very friendly and funny and the great service will enhance your dining experience! I would rate Sparrow 9/10.
